{"id":3254,"date":"2010-09-02T23:19:02","date_gmt":"2010-09-03T04:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stephenpickering.com\/?p=3254"},"modified":"2020-05-17T17:02:54","modified_gmt":"2020-05-17T22:02:54","slug":"a-new-original-poem-theres-something-dark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephenpickering.com\/wordpress\/2010\/09\/02\/a-new-original-poem-theres-something-dark\/","title":{"rendered":"A New Original Poem: &#8220;There&#8217;s something dark&#8230;&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"[audio:http:\/\/www.stephenpickering.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Theres-Something-Dark.mp3]\n<p>There&#8217;s something dark about this town.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s made my heart all broken sore.<br \/>\nThe stars upstairs they hear a sound.<br \/>\nThe dark hair girl she&#8217;s at the door.<br \/>\nI want to go somewhere and weep.<br \/>\nShe hurts me with her darkest stares.<br \/>\nThrough her I walk the lonely street<br \/>\nOf silent dreams and cold nightmares.<br \/>\nThe scars of vice in Central Park<br \/>\nArrest the man the news had lost.<br \/>\nHe waltzes girls back to the dark<br \/>\nWho think of nothing nor what it costs.<br \/>\nThese folks who tell their dreams goodbye,<br \/>\nBuild towers up to cut the sky.<\/p>\n<p>These flowers bloom and the night goes on<br \/>\nThe T.V. tells us what&#8217;s right from wrong.<\/p>\n<p>_____________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<address><span style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 24px; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">*Notes: I&#8217;ve been experimenting with different sized &#8216;feet&#8217; than pentameter. So, the above poem is just like a sonnet in its structure, except its in iambic &#8216;quadrameter&#8217; or four iambic feet. I don&#8217;t know why. Just to try something different. I did another in iambic tetrameter. Oh actually I posted that a few days ago, I think. Oh yes, in this lot of three poems, it&#8217;s the first: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stephenpickering.com\/2010\/08\/28\/saturday-reading-three-new-poems\/\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">http:\/\/www.stephenpickering.com\/2010\/08\/28\/saturday-reading-three-new-poems\/<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/address>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">I&#8217;ve also been working with some that have varying lengths. I think the best bet in the long run for me, is to let the line speak for itself, in the sense that, however it hits me, whatever length that is, just go with that. And then I think you get to a point where you don&#8217;t really need to fit the line into a structure if it doesn&#8217;t come to you that way, which naturally is free verse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">So I guess, one of the points of writing within structure, is almost like exercise.
