{"id":1513,"date":"2009-10-21T20:29:14","date_gmt":"2009-10-22T01:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stephenpickering.com\/?p=1513"},"modified":"2009-10-22T04:45:59","modified_gmt":"2009-10-22T09:45:59","slug":"an-original-poem-wall-paintings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephenpickering.com\/wordpress\/2009\/10\/21\/an-original-poem-wall-paintings\/","title":{"rendered":"An Original Poem | &#8220;Wall Paintings&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<table border=\"0\" align=\"left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\n    google_ad_client = \"pub-9460716267036836\"; \/* 300x250, created 10\/20\/09 InContext *\/ google_ad_slot = \"1618796451\"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250;\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><br \/>\n<script src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\n<\/script><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>These brick buildings,<br \/>\nwell they won&#8217;t help us now.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s not what the soul wants.<br \/>\nThe soul wants to open up<br \/>\nCoconut shells and rain from clouds<br \/>\nand hang leafy shells on your ears as an engagement ring.<br \/>\nThe Hungarian tribes inside it are unfrozen by the wandering Danube.<br \/>\nThey are on their way to the black sea to wash their rusty hands clean<br \/>\nOf the poison the stag men cursed them with<br \/>\nFor dripping the cave dark without homage.<br \/>\nTheir hands&#8217; ache is released by the goddess of the river<br \/>\nSecond cousin to Athena due to be married any day now<br \/>\nTo the sea&#8217;s never ending unbounded completeness.<br \/>\nThe hand that skims the shoals learns Russian<br \/>\nUnder the water and can speak to the wood carp now<br \/>\nAs the whole caravan is guided eastward by the alps breath.<br \/>\nEli&#8217;s sister is swept down the Blue Ridges to the village<br \/>\nThat she spent her childhood running from<br \/>\nTo spin cotton into gold.<br \/>\nA thread long enough to stretch the Atlantic and be sold.<br \/>\nShe&#8217;s happy to have work again but has reseigned herself<br \/>\nOf ever marrying.<br \/>\nThe soul doesn&#8217;t want these things. The hand only wants water<br \/>\nAnd the nose only the red and orange leaves<br \/>\nFloating on the God of the Appalachian&#8217;s breath.<br \/>\nBut she will come back. If you pray enough they shall release her.<br \/>\nWe&#8217;ll sit in coffee shops in Paris all night writing lines<br \/>\nHoping the girl shall find him and the string reach the Hungarians in time.<br \/>\nWhat do the poet&#8217;s strike out at when they sleep?<br \/>\nDo they think when they dream<br \/>\nOr only dream of sleeping with her<br \/>\nWhen the journey has been made<br \/>\nAnd the cave stags can rise up their sacred hole again<br \/>\nLighting the darkness in the world above?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These brick buildings, well they won&#8217;t help us now.
